山西大学，简称山大，创建于1902年5月8日，最初名为山西大学堂，坐落于中华人民共和国山西省太原市小店区和大同市平城区、云冈区，是一所公立高等院校，是中国办学历史最悠久的高等学府之一。现为山西省人民政府和教育部共同建设的部省合建大学、第二轮“双一流”建设高校、国家中西部高校综合实力提升工程（一省一校工程）重点建设的14所院校之一，同时还是中西部高校联盟成员。
