South Korea is a country many of us are familiar with. In particular, Korean pop culture has become hugely popular in recent years, so many people have been influenced by it to some extent. Some have even started thinking about studying in South Korea. But since studying abroad means going overseas, the cost is an important consideration for many families.
Below, let’s look at the scholarships available to international students at Seoul National University, Korea’s top-ranked university, that can be applied for during undergraduate study and may help ease the financial burden on families.
Scholarships Available Before or During Admission:
Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP)
Eligibility: International applicants to SNU’s four-year undergraduate programs.
- Students enrolled in programs longer than four years, such as medicine, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, and architecture, are not eligible for this scholarship.
Number of recipients: About 20–40 each year
Benefits:
Full tuition: Exemption from tuition for 8 semesters
Living allowance: KRW 900,000 per month
Airfare: One round-trip economy-class ticket
Korean language training: One year
- Korean language training is mandatory. If students do not reach TOPIK Level 3 within one year, they will not be eligible to enter the degree program.
Other benefits: Medical insurance, settlement allowance, and return airfare
Application period: September
Review process: Applicants submit materials to the Korean embassy in their home country → the embassy conducts the first round of selection → the National Institute for International Education makes the final selection

Scholarships Available After Admission:
1. Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) - Government Scholarship for Self-Financed International Students
Eligibility:
Self-financed international students in their second, third, or fourth year
Both cumulative GPA and the previous semester GPA must be above 80 out of 100
Benefits: About KRW 6,000,000 total (KRW 500,000 per month)
Duration: About 12 months
Application period: Around February
Review process: Applicants submit materials to SNU’s Office of International Affairs → the Office sends the materials to the National Institute for International Education → the institute conducts the selection process → notifications are issued

2. Daewoong Foundation Scholarship
Eligibility: International students enrolled in undergraduate degree programs
Benefits: One-time award of KRW 2,000,000. Recipients may also have opportunities to work at Daewoong Group, and graduating students have an advantage when applying to the company.
Application period: Around April each year
Review process: Applicants submit documents to SNU’s Office of International Affairs → the office makes the first selection → the Daewoong Foundation conducts interviews → final decisions are announced

3. Korean War Memorial Foundation Scholarship
Eligibility: Direct descendants of foreign veterans who fought in the Korean War
Benefits:
Tuition: Full tuition waiver
Dormitory fee: Subsidized by SNU
Living allowance: KRW 500,000 per month
Review process: Applicants submit applications through their respective colleges → the colleges conduct the first round of selection → SNU’s Office of International Affairs conducts the second round of selection → the Korean War Memorial Foundation confirms the results → final decisions are announced
